Happiness in Manolo Blahniks

[This is a work of fiction, and any resemblance to a person is purely coincidental.]

The shoes didn't even match her outfit! Agreed, I don't know much about women's fashion, but when you have a gazillion pair of shoes, why wear zebra-patterned one with a bright yellow dress? They don't look particularly comfortable either. But they are Manolo Blahniks. And that apparently excuses everything.

Manolo Blahnik. I googled it. You don't  want to know how much those uncomfortable contraptions cost. Let's just say, one can comfortably feed a family for a year.

Wonder what's got into my mother after the divorce. Wasn't she much happier when we were splashing through puddles in our all-purpose crocs?

_____
drabble is a story told in exactly 100 words.

In October 2010, the Burrow is presenting a collection of drabbles inspired by the colours of the Spectrum. Read this Red drabble and many, many more  exclusively at the Burrow.

Very illustrative. The Drabbles seem like a great exercise to say a lot succinctly.

Love the metaphor in this one. So very sad.

Rayna - What an achingly sad metaphor...So many people figuratively choose Manolos over Crocs...What a good reminder of what is important.

Simple pleasures. Sometimes we all need reminding :)

oh, I don't know - I don't feel this sadness here - I feel that the child simply doesn't get that SOMETIMES a great pair of shoes can transport one beyond the everyday. That we can still be a mother with practical considerations but maybe we need to be princess grace just once in awhile...

The simple pleasures in life are the ones that we sometimes forget to enjoy.

This is excellent! The few comments here could bring quite a "conversation."
Rayna, your crown remains intact.

Clever, Rayna!

If I have to spend more than $10 on shoes, I'm complaining. It sure says a lot about my fashion...

Fashion before comfort!
And the highest I go is $30 for MUDD shoes.

I like the drabble and hate the shoes. I don't spend much on clothes in general...no celebrity dinners for me.

My sister despairs . . . I'm not a girly girl and am all about the comfort.

@wow this is amazing! i never knew about a drabble .U r so gud at it..it must be a very difficult job to just write it in 100 words.how do u manage to stick on to just 100? editing would definetely be crucial part of it right?

Excellent one as usual!

I am tempted not to comment on all your comments, because the debate is something I never expected. To be honest, I wrote a simple story of lost childhood, but deeper meanings have been found, which I am quite happy with....

@ Will- drabbles are a great writing exercise, I think.

@ Fiona- lost childhood. One of the saddest things there can be.

@ Margot- the day you let someone else control how you feel and what you do, you've lost something of you.
Thank you.

@ Jules- we do need to remember that, don't we? Some of the most fun things are free.

@ Jan- you know, Jan, I never thought of it that way at all. But you do make sense- sometimes, you do need a pair of glass slippers to remind you to hold onto your dreams. Love how something you write can take on a life of it's own outside you.

@ Mason- so often do, unfortunately.

@ Mary- I do love the direction the comments are taking, don't you? And I need to hold on tight, to make sure the crown stays with me for a bit.

@ Alex- thank you

@ Clarissa- I do spend much more on shoes, but only if they are running shoes- my knees are precious

@ Diane- Agree totally. I have one pair of gorgeous but uncomfortable shoes that I never wear. But that's it.

@ Nancy - not for me either. I buy shoes for comfort. If they also look good, that's a bonus.

@ Dyche- me too.

@ SueAnn- absolutely.

@ raji- editing is the most difficult part, but I have been doing this for so long, I get it +/- 10 words in the first draft itself.

@ gargimehra- thank you.
