When will we get real?

Two days back, we celebrated Earth Day by turning off lights and burning a candle for an hour. That candles were adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, we conveniently forgot. And after doing our bit for the planet, we went off to sleep in our air conditioned rooms.
In two days, we will be celebrating the Festival of Colours by pouring buckets full of coloured water on each other. Less than a hundred miles away, the villages are reeling under one of the worst periods of drought in recent years.
When will the disconnect end? When will be get real?

There's a lot of things I do not understand. Why take the car to work when the bus starts right in front of your door, the subway holds directly in front of the office and the month pass is only 70.- (and it only takes 10min longer than going by car)? Why dry your clothes with a tumble dryer when they will dry on their own and only take a little while longer, and all you have to do is plan a day in advance? Why switch on lights and heating in every single friggin' room of your home? Never underestiamte the power of "convenience"... ack.

Natasha - I sometimes think we do a lot of things symbolically that don't have a lot of real-world effect. It is good to be reminded of the need to care for the Earth, but too many people stop there and don't actually make the sacrifices they need to make to do the planet a lot of good...
